DUO – Inburgeraars/Inburgeren

DUO – Inburgeraars/Homepage 2010.

Inburgeren is part of the integration required of all newcomers to the  Netherlands.  It is not a requirement for EU citizens, because of the rules governing the free movement of people, but for people from other countries, it is compulsory.

Integration courses are, however, very helpful, if not compulsory, for the EU citizen, as they involve basic language tuition, and some basic information on Dutch culture.  KNS – the knowledge of Dutch society – is a fundamental part of these courses.  Knowing more about the people with whom you live and/or work seems (at least to me) to be invaluable.

  1. It’s not just newcomers that have to do inburgering, but all immigrants, regardless of how long they have been here. I’m from the US and have been here in Amsterdam more than 20 years. I’ve recently been getting letters from the city demanding I meet the requirement.

It’s also not just EU citizens who are exempt, but also Turks. Since Turks are the main immigrant group here, that means most people are exempt. For the most part that leaves Moroccans and Americans, and a handful of smaller immigrant groups.

While it’s nice to have free courses available for people who want to learn Dutch language and culture, these courses have been widely criticized for being overly simplified and unsuitable for more educated immigrants, as well as poorly run in general.

Have you seen this comedian? To be honest you have to understand a little Dutch, because he mixes it up with English in a silly way, but you probably get the idea.

  2. Great find- very funny. In Australia we have an entrance examination for migrants which can make non sport lovers and history ignoramouses struggle. It could lend itself to a similar skit. Now in Oz but was born in Nederland. I hope cloggie has done well.
